A review of Darnall Liberal Club & Institute Ltd by Michael Mears Chattaway written on Sunday 26th of July 2020
My grandad Geoge Mears was a regular snooker player at the Lib.
He played in the annual trophy
championship and won three years on the trot ! Which meant he kept the cup. He was a farmer at Dore House Farm and had won a silver cup at a big farmers national show for best cows which had kept on his mantlepiece. He decided to donate this cup to the Lib club to create a a new trophy to compete for. The cup was re-inscribed THE GEORGE MEARS TROPHY and was played for every year. I have often wondered what happens to it. I was born in Darnall 1940 and moved to Handsworth in 1952. Lived on Unwin Street (now gone). My grandad died in 1969 aged 81..
